Description: Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a lovely antique Burmese Art Glass salt and pepper shakers made by the Mt. Washington Glass Company in the 1880's. The pair have a satin finish, a ribbed body and screw-on silver metal lids. Designed by Frederick Shirley in 1885, this single layer glass achieved a delicate coloration of pink or salmon shading to yellow by the addition of uranium oxide and gold to the original glass batch. This created a yellow opaque glass which upon reheating caused the color to change into a soft pink. The uranium in the glass also causes the vase to fluoresce brightly when exposed to black light. These shakers are pictured on pages 32 and 235 of the book "Mt. Washington Art Glass" by Betty B. Sisk. Measure 4" high with a 1 1/2" diameter base. Combined weight is 10.7 ounces. These nice shakers are in excellent Estate condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The screw-on silver lids operate smoothly and have their naturally aged patina and have not been polished. Burmese glass is highly collected and is also included in all major American Art Glass collections. This glass is rare today as it was very expensive to manufacture and was only made for a short period of time.
