Description: Offered by Over The Blue Horizon and recently obtained in Tokyo is a difficult-to-obtain and long out-of-print Famous Airplanes of the World (FAOW) Black Cover publication featuring the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) Mitsubishi A6M ZERO: FAOW Black Cover, Number 56, January 1996 (Models 22-63) The Allies' main opponent in the Pacific air war, the ZERO is the most famous symbol of Japanese air power during World War II. The fighter first flew in April 1939, and by the end of the war, almost 11,000 ZEROs had been produced. The ZERO got its name from its official designation, Navy Type Zero Carrier-Based Fighter (or REISEN), and although the Allies code-named it ZEKE, it was most commonly referred to as the ZERO. Designed as the successor to the A5M Type 96 CLAUDE, Mitsubishi designed the A6M to serve the Imperial Japanese Navy as an air-superiority fighter that was fast, maneuverable and had great range. Initially superior to all Allied fighters it faced, the Japanese advantage began to disappear as American tactics evolved and more capable Allied fighters were introduced. While development/improvement of the ZERO continued by adding self-sealing tanks, armor plate and a more powerful engine, these later models were much heavier and thus less nimble. Weight increased 28 percent, but horsepower increased only 16 percent, degrading overall combat performance. Beginning around October 1944 during the battle for the Philippines, ZEROs began to be used for kamikaze attacks. Kamikazes used A6Ms more than any other aircraft for these suicide missions. This FAOW covers the later model ZEROs. The FAOW series began publication in the late 1960s and are highly illustrated monographs focusing on a specific aircraft or family of aircraft. Text is in Japanese, but the photographs, scale line drawings, cut-away drawings, cockpit diagrams, close-up detail drawings and profiles transcend the written word and have appealed to aircraft historians and hobbyists to this day. The formats and covers have slightly changed over the years. Originally, the FAOW covers were White but changed in 1971 to Blue. In 1979, the FAOW covers changed to a Chart background, and then in 1986, changed to the current Black Cover series. This 7.25 x 10.25 inch softcover with dustjacket is 88 pages long and is in VERY GOOD approaching LIKE NEW condition.
