Description: Mid-20th Century Round Alkaline Greenish Thin-Walled Vase Marks Sun w/Rays SPR77 The pure minimalist spherical shape of this vase evokes similar pieces in Japan, coupled with its American Folk Art imperfections, results in an art object that is very satisfying to the eye. Condition: Very Good Vintage Georgia (?) Vase. Very dark alkaline dark greenish-brown glossy glaze (interacting with iron). Virtually round corded vase that is very thin walled thrown on a wheel - difficult to fire. Top hole is 1 inch in diameter. Vase is 5 inches high. Vase bottom is 3.5 inches in diameter. Made from dark Georgia red clay. Weight is 21.3 ounces. Vase exhibits its age with imperfections, tiny chips around the top opening, and random defects in the glaze consistent with Folk Art. Mark: The vase has a mark of a sun with detached rays radiating outward. It has two numerals, 77. It has three letters SPR. The 77 could of course mean 1877 or 1977. Geography: The assumption is that since this was found in rural Georgia it was probably made in Georgia? However, alkaline glazes were notably used in the 19th century by potters in the Edgefield District of South Carolina, producing distinctive greenish-brown stoneware similar to this vase.
