Description: This auction is for a RARE METROPOLIS "MARIA" PROTOTYPE FIGURE. It is a truly one-of-a-kind piece! The resin figure is of the classic sci-fi icon "Maria", as seen in the 1927 Fritz Lang movie "Metropolis". Here's the scoop... Back in April, 2015, I attended the Chiller Theatre Festival in New Jersey. Roaming the rooms, I came across a table manned by Scott Maple, director of the enterprise Kropserkel Inc. He had some great products available, plus a life size Maria that you could have your picture taken with. Along as his guest was Bertina Schulze-Mittendorff, daughter of the Metropolis film sculptor Walter Schulze-Mittendorff (there is a youtube video I just found of the presentation Scott and Bertina presented at Chiller that weekend, if you are interested...). I purchased a couple of the Kropserkel products. One was a large laser-etched crystal cylinder (which I am not selling at this point...#21 of 50), and the other was this grand Maria figure of her lying on a reclining platform. At the time, I was emailing the director about the etched cylinder, and also asked him about this figure. I found my old email chain, and also some written notes I had concerning this prototype. My notes tell me there were three different sizes available, of which I believe this one was the largest (I think there was also a snowglobe available with this figure in it, but I could be wrong about that). In my emails to Scott, he gave some insight in to this particular figure. To quote; "The prototype figure you have is a generated high resolution 3D print of our model from a stereo lithography printer. It is formed in a tank of UV sensitive resin polymer, and 'drawn' with a UV reactant laser. Everything you have is drawn by lasers. Light makes for a very fine tip in creating high resolution. The purpose of these is to make scaled versions of products we are working on now, all of which are very exciting." I believe that the company is still around and can be found on Facebook, but the website appears to be long dormant. However, check their site out, as it has a ton of great information (not on the prototype though). It is https://www.kropserkel.com/indexmet.html So that's the history of this figure. I do not think it ever went in to production. In the photos, I showed multiple angles. Some of the pictures were lightened to show the details of the figure. Again, this figure is a deep, dark black color. The size of the base (measured on the flat bottom underneath) is 4" X 2". From the back of the base to the top of Maria's head is 4". From the base to the top of her toes is about 7/8 of an inch. The length of Maria reclining is 4 3/4", and 5 1/2" from her head to the bottom of the base (below her feet). The model is exactly as I purchased it. It was taken home, wrapped and placed in a box. The only things I can see are some broken spokes that hold the platform up. These could have been broken when Scott brought it down from Canada for the Chiller show. You can see these post breaks are pretty much all on the same strut. In pics #2 through #6, you can see three of the breaks in the upper portion of the strut, closer to Maria's head. One is a clear separation. If you go up a fraction, you can see a small bar that slants up to the left. Though it's hard to see, there is a break there, close to the adjoining post. Right above that is the third break, where it looks like the post is pushed in in a slight sideways "V" formation. Finally, in photo #12, it shows the final break near the bottom of this same post. If you're looking for a rare piece, here is one to add to your collection. A genuine, one-of-a-kind Metropolis Maria PROTOTYPE! If you have any questions about this item, please feel free to email me. Also, check out my other auctions going on NOW of various other items of interest (right now I have a copy of the Boris Bilinsky movie poster that was sold at the Museum of Modern Art years ago, and the large Masudaya Maria figure will be listed...soon...sometime before Thanksgiving). Thanks again for looking...during these most very...very...very...troubled times... 10-13-24
