The duke (Louis de Rouvroy), with this account of the court at Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV, became known as one of France's greatest memoirists, maybe because of all the cat fighting: "The Saint-Simon that is revealed through the Mémoires had many enemies, and a hatred reciprocated by many courtiers (Wikipedia). In spite of its size, the present set is substantially briefer than the original French text.
