Description: Original, signed Mata Ortiz polychrome olla by Angel Amaya. This is an exquisitely delicate piece, measuring 3.5" tall, 7" in diameter, with a 20" circumference. The artist created this piece October 2003. This comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, dated 12.01.2003. Angel Amaya is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz. He and his wife, Avelina Corona, work together: she makes the pots and cuts the openings while he does the decorations. Both potters were featured in the book The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz (under his name). Mata Ortiz pottery is considered one of the finest ceramics in the world. It is the result of the cultural heritage of the Pre-Columbian culture of Casas Grandes, also known as Paquimé, and the efforts of Juan Quezada Celado, the man who made possible the "Miracle of Mata Ortiz" by recovering ancient lost pottery techniques and sharing his knowledge with the people of his hometown in Chihuahua, México. This created a true renaissance of ceramics in the southwest and transformed the remote rural Mexican town of Mata Ortiz into a Pottery artists village.
