Description: A gold washed button worn by Massachusetts Militia units during the Civil War. It is the smaller size worn on the cuff or one of the side buttons of the soldiers kepi. The button was excavated from the Chancellorsville Battlefield in Virginia. The Battle of Chancellorsville was fought from April 30 to May 6, 1863, near the village of Chancellorsville. Two related battles were fought nearby on May 3 in the vicinity of Fredericksburg. The campaign pitted Union Army Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker's “Army of the Potomac” against an army less than half its size, General Robert E. Lee's Confederate “Army of Northern Virginia”. The button measures 9/16”. The artifact comes as shown in a 3” x 4” riker style case. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated.
