New. Dive bombers became known in the history especially during World War Two. Precise bombing from the dive allowed for many possibilities of striking strategically important targets by using relatively small input. The best examples are heavily armoured and armed warships which sunk struck by bombs from dive bombers. Diving strikes also had a big psychological effect on attacked civilians and soldiers. Without any doubt the most recognisable aircraft bringing terror through direct dive bombings was Junkers Ju 87 "Stuka". The piercing sound of its sirens caused panic attacks among people on the ground. But before characteristic "Stuka" settled in German Luftwaffe, a different aircraft was used as a dive bomber - Henschel Hs 123. This inconspicuous biplane fought well in Spanish Civil War where German pilots gained important experience used later in many campaigns during World War Two. Henschel Hs 123 was a successful and solid plane, a good dive bomber and assault plane used for close combat support. Those aircrafts were flying in Legion Condor in Spain, later they took part in campaigns in Poland, Benelux, and France.Henschels' Hs 123 also flew during operation "Barbarossa" - German invasion on USSR on the 22nd of June 1941. What is quite interesting, they were used on Eastern Front until 1944. Although they were very obsolete at that time, they were still useful as assault planes in close support for friendly infantry. Finally, all the Hs 123's were lost in combat, especially after Luftwaffe lost air supremacy at all fronts. There are no surviving Hs 123 in our times.
