Description: Magical Mystery Tour is a record by the English rock band the Beatles that was released as an LP in the United States by Capitol Records on November 27, 1967. After the Beatles completed Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in April 1967, Paul McCartney wanted to create a film that captured a psychedelic theme similar to that represented by author and LSD proponent Ken Kesey’s Merry Pranksters on the US West Coast. Titled Magical Mystery Tour, it would combine Kesey's idea of a psychedelic bus ride with McCartney's memories of Liverpudlians holidaying on coach tours. The LP includes the soundtrack to that 1967 television film of the same name and features an additional five songs that were originally released as singles that year. When recording their new songs, the Beatles continued the studio experimentation that had typified Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) and the psychedelic sound they had pursued since Revolver (1966). McCartney contributed three of the soundtrack songs, including the widely covered "The Fool on the Hill", while John Lennon and George Harrison contributed "I Am the Walrus" and "Blue Jay Way", respectively. The sessions also produced "Hello, Goodbye", issued as a single accompanying the soundtrack record, and items of incidental music for the film, including "Flying". Furthering the Beatles' desire to experiment with record formats and packaging, the LP included a 24-page booklet containing song lyrics, color photos from film production, and color story illustrations by cartoonist Bob Gibson. Despite widespread mixed-to-negative reception of the Magical Mystery Tour film, the soundtrack was a critical and commercial success. The album topped Billboard's Top LPs listings for eight weeks and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1969. THIS COPY is a Winchester reissue pressing from 1971 (See Notes, below). The vinyl has some visible marks, including two "bumps" (?) in band four on side one (see close up photo), yet per a (close!) test listen, nothing, not even those bumps, affect playback. The vinyl is in Very Good [VG] condition. The original gatefold sleeve is also in Very Good [VG] condition, showing only slight wear from handling. The 24 page booklet has become detached from inside the cover where it is stored; this apparently is not uncommon. There is a thin line of what seems to be glue residue along the back of the seam edge of the booklet, but it is all but unnoticeable. The booklet itself is in excellent condition. The original inner sleeve, which is plain white, now slightly browning with age, is also in excellent condition, with no splits, tears, writing, stains, etc., etc. Notes 1971-73 pressing. -Apple Label - MFD.
