He abandoned (in 1901) his law studies in Warsaw, to begin studying painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. He was 25 years old when, in 1903, he came to Paris. He continued his art studies at the Académie Julian in Jules Lefebvre's studio. The artist exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne in 1905. He earns his living by making caricatures for satirical newspapers ("Parisian life", "The Butter Plate"). The year 1907 was a year of creative crisis: the artist destroyed his work and abandoned painting for a time. Markus, however, will very quickly become part of the artistic bohemian milieu of Montmartre and Montparnasse by linking up with Jean Moréas, Alfred Jarry and Edgar Degas. He frequents cafes where he meets Braque, Picasso, Apollinaire; it was the latter who made his name Frenchified: he became Louis Marcoussis. The artist will naturally be part of the avant-garde movement of the School of Paris (G. Apollinaire, Picasso, Juan Gray, Max Jacob, Metzinger, etc.). Initially impressionist, his art will go to cubismaround 1910. In 1912, he participated in the salon Gold Section at the La Boëtie Gallery. He married Alice Halicka, a Polish painter, in 1913. The years of war forced him to return to Poland to be mobilized; he subsequently joined the Foreign Legion where he served until 1919. He participates in the various Parisian Salons (Salons d'Automne, des Indépendants and Tuileries), as well as in collective events abroad. His first personal exhibition was organized in 1925 (Galerie Pierre Chareau). He also exhibited at Bernheim (1929) and Jeanne Bucher (1929). The 1930s saw him devote himself mainly to engraving, perfecting his great skills in the techniques of etching, aquatint and drypoint; he will teach the art of engraving at the Schläepfer Academy (Paris). Louis Marcoussis will create illustrations on poems by T. Tzara (1926, 1928), for "Aurélie" by Gérard de Nerval and "Alcohols" by Apollinaire (1934). In the interwar period he made several trips: Poland, England, Belgium, Italy and the United States; exhibitions are organized in his name. In 1940, upon the arrival of German troops, Louis Marcoussis left for Cusset, near Vichy, where he died a year later. A posthumous exhibition of the artist's works will be organized in 1964 at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. In 1985 works by Louis Marcoussis will be part of the exhibition "The Circle of Jewish Montparnasse artists in Paris " At New York. His art is present in all the greatest museums in the world.
