Description: ”Masterpieces of Primitive American Art, I-A Tularosa Jar,” by Louie Ewing. Silkscreen/serigraph produced for the Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe, NM. 1944. It measures approximately 13 1/2” x 10 1/2”. (It appears that this print may have been cut to be possibly framed or matted.) Signed in pencil. The silkscreen depicts a “Pre-historic” jar from the Tularosa area. Ewing captures the distinctive contrast of the painted surface of the pottery. The muted background highlights the main subject. It was printed for the New Mexico Laboratory of Anthropology that is still in existence and associated with the Museum of Indian Art and Culture (MIAC). An early impression in the series at 34/500. The jacket is printed by letterpress. Detail images show the characteristic letterpress printing process. The print is in very good condition with only minor creasing. There is some evidence of acidic leaching most likely caused by prior mounting or storage with non-archival material. Please see detail images.
