Rhodium is a valuable metal used in jewelry to give other materials (primarily, white gold) a lustrous, silver-color shine. All white gold is initially coated with rhodium, and after years of wear, the rhodium coating on white gold is worn away, leaving a yellow tinted metal. This is normal, because white gold is the colloquial term for the alloy that is gold mixed with silver-colored metals; so white gold is naturally yellow-tinted. In jewelry, this tint from wear is referred to as “patina”.
