In fact, it wasn’t until more powerful Longwave (365nm) UV lights were recently developed that the mineral community even realized zincite COULD, in some cases, fluoresce! And this is a GREAT example of that! Lots and Lots of Rust-red zincite that fluoresces yellow-green under a powerful longwave UV light (like the FyrFly by Engenious Designs). This is a Large Franklin fluorescent Zincite with some phosphorescent willemite weighing in at 10.5 ounces (298 g), and measuring approximately 2.75 inches X 2.00 inches X 1.50 inches (6.8 cm X 5.0 cm X 3.6 cm). All the LONGWAVE UV photos (# 1, 2, 4, and 5) were taken with the Hoplite 365nm light. A lamp of similar quality, like the FyrFly, is necessary to see the all the fluorescent zincite well. (Don’t expect a “tube” fluorescent bulb light, no matter the wattage, to fluoresce zincite as well.) Photos # 6 and 7 were taken with an Engenious Designs Midwave flashlight, and Photos # 8 and 9 were taken with a fluorescent shortwave tube lamp.
