The company’s model trains have been their claim to fame since the company’s founding. In the early 1900’s, railroads were the economic lifeblood of the United States, and Cowen’s toy trains seized on America’s fascination with railroads. Cowen’s first model trains were originally designed as exciting props for window displays in stores. The early models were powered by “wet cell” (acid filled) batteries because electricity wasn’t yet available in most homes. Lionel’s model train sales grew steadily, and peaked in the 1950’s. The company’s advertisements encouraged fathers to buy their trains as a means to bond with their sons, and prepare them for adulthood. The Lionel name became synonymous with Christmas, and a train set under every tree. In the 1960’s, railroads began to give way to automobiles and airplanes, and Lionel’s model train sales declined. The company filed bankruptcy in 1967 and was taken over by General Mills in 1969. Over the next 3 decades, the company was sold and operated by several different companies.
