Description: "Lee Marvin: His Films and Career" (2000, McFarland and Co.) is my first movie reference work. This is the blue hardcover version, published just before McFarland began providing illustrated covers. It is not a biography of the Academy Award-winning actor, though it certainly has personal information sprinkled throughout, but a commentary on his long, productive film and television career. Marvin, after a brief tenure on Broadway, began acting on film in 1951. Within a few years he was one of Hollywood's favorite bad guys, menacing Gloria Grahame in "The Big Heat," Marlon Brando in "The Wild One," Spencer Tracy in "Bad Day at Black Rock" and Randolph Scott in "Seven Days from Now." A three-season stint as the star of television's syndicated series "M Squad" made him a household name and moved him into a more heroic light. The 1960s were his golden era, sharing the screen with John Wayne in three consecutive movies, including the great western "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." This led to archly villainous roles in "The Killers" and "Cat Ballou" (his surprise Oscar triumph), as well as thoughtful antiheroes in "The Professionals," "The Dirty Dozen," "Point Blank," and the two-character World War II drama "Hell in the Pacific." He finished the decade by turning down "The Wild Bunch" to take on a comic musical role in "Paint Your Wagon," a fiasco that paid him a million dollars and earned him a gold record for the song "Wand'rin' Star." Marvin turned laconic in the 1970s with "Monte Walsh," "Emperor of the North (Pole)," "The Iceman Cometh" and others, and spent more time in court than in front of the cameras when his domestic situation led to a very public "palimony" suit. He finished his career with a couple of really good films, "The Big Red One" and "Gorky Park," and a few mediocre titles. He died in 1987 before he could begin filming a sequel to "The Delta Force," his final film appearance. All in all he was a terrific, often underrated actor who made almost every movie he appeared in better for his presence, and some into classics. The book contains 76 photographs and / or artwork illustrations, an appendix for his "M Squad" and "Lawbreaker" television series and other television appearances, an appendix on his documentary, short film and stage appearances, plus a detailed bibliography of sources for each film and an index. The books are unused; they have been in storage for years and I am attempting to lower my inventory. I will be happy to inscribe one upon request. Any copy I sell will be signed. Shipping costs will be combined for multiple items. International shipping is available at a flat rate of $25. If the actual cost is significantly less than that, money will be refunded. I have two other movie reference books that I am offering in separate listings: "Korean War Filmography" (2003) and "Gloria Grahame: Bad Girl of Film Noir" (2011). I am also offering other parts of my movie memorabilia collection on eBay: CD soundtracks, DVDs and movie stills. I will be adding press kits, pressbooks, other movie reference books, laserdiscs and other items as I can process them into listings. I try to list these items at reasonable rates, describing their condition as accurately as possible. If you have interest, please consider adding something to your own library or collection.
