Description: This is a reinforcing sleeve for a Laser Sailboat boom. You can use one of these sleeves with a cracked or broken mast upper section to make a new boom. I’ve seen these listed as an ILCA part, but people often make them from old booms, which is what I have done here. To make one of these requires making two straight cuts along the axis of an old boom or mast upper section and removing a strip of material. Then it has to be carefully rebent, full length, so that it can be slid inside of a new boom (usually made from a broken or cracked upper mast section). I have seen the ILCA reinforcing sleeves. They are a loose sliding fit. The ones that I have made are a press fit, which makes them easier to locate precisely where they belong, because they don’t slide. Since I have made mine from an old boom, it has holes where fittings were attached. This does not affect the strength or utility of the sleeve, and since the sleeve cannot be seen after installation, it does not affect the appearance of the finished work. I have made a couple of booms in this manner. This one is left over, and I don’t need it. They are not especially easy to make, so this is a good deal for you. When making a boom, I recommend using Lanocoat on all of the rivets before installing them. It will help prevent galvanic action from corroding the aluminum where it contacts the steel rivet. If you sail in salt water be sure and flush the boom after sailing if the boom gets wet. Galvanic action is the principle cause of boom failure. Your homemade boom will last better than an ILCA boom because they don’t use Lanocoat on the rivets. In the photos you will notice an extra collar. That is a piece of an old boom that I used for a test sleeve. Just before I took the photo, I slid the collar full length from one end of the sleeve to the other to make certain that it fit properly. It was a stiff slide, but I did it without tools. Here is the installation specification from the Laser Class Rule #18: A metal sleeve supplied by the builder of maximum length 900 mm may be fixed inside the boom. The sleeve shall not extend aft of the point 1220 mm from the front end of the boom (including plug).
