I did my best to capture the incredible variety of the color, pattern, and size that these stones can be. Lightning stones (aka Septarian Nodules) are estimated at first forming 55 million years ago. These were found on the lake Michigan shoreline, they consist of clay cemented onto an iron mineral called siderite. Over time, cracks form in the clay and as mineral rich water runs over top of them the cracks gradually fill in with calcite and aragonite; thus forming the beautiful lightning-like markings that make these stones so unique.
