Add'l Information: The Adoration of the Child is a painting by the Dutch painter Gerard van Honthorst made around 1619-1620 and preserved in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. This painting is one of five paintings by Honthorst in the Uffizi, and all exhibit a tenebrist style which shows why in Italy they call him Gherardo delle Notti or Gerald of the Night. Supposedly these were all purchased in 1628 by Ferdinand II de'Medici of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, who had just returned from a trip to Northern Europe and sent an intermediary to investigate "6 paintings" which were for sale in Rome. The Adoration of the Child shows a moonlit scene with the Virgin Mary placing the baby in swaddling clothes. Saint Joseph looks down from Mary's shoulder at the child and two angels bow down to the cradle. The moonlight is so reflected in the faces that the baby Jesus is the source of the light. The canvas recalls earlier versions of this theme such as the Nativity of Jesus by Geertgen tot Sint Jans. The subject of the Child as a source of light was used again by Honthorst in other paintings. PLEASE NOTE: Postcards may contain flaws from age, handling and use.
