Description: JAPANESE KOMAI STYLE CHEROOT OR CIGARETTE CASE | LATE MEIJI TAISHO ERA 1890 – 1920 | MARKED “KYOTO” This magnificent Japanese Komai style cigarette case is a stunning piece from the Late Meiji Taisho Era, dated between 1890 and 1920 and marked "Kyoto". The case is slightly curved and crafted from iron, this antique original features a beautiful tones of gold nunome-zogan technique on patinated iron that adds to its charm. The case is adorned with intricate designs that display its Japanese origin and heritage. On one side, there is a landscape view of temple buildings and rustic dwellings with Fujiyama (Fuji-san) mountain in the distance, the reverse shows a convoluted three-clawed dragon in pursuit of Buddhist "Tama" (flaming pearls of wisdom), the interstices is applied with black lacquer, each vignette within decorative borders, marked to the interior "Kyoto". Both original holders are still inside. The cheroot or cigarette case is a great addition to any collection of Asian antiques, or for those who appreciate unique and rare pieces or pieces that relate to Tobacciana. Whether displayed or used, this piece is sure to be a conversation starter. Condition:I will mention that there are two very small and barely visible white pieces (I can only guess that they are some type of plastic) added to the lock mechanism on both sides on the inside (they can be seen in few of the photos - so take a really good look of the photos) - my guess is they were added at some point in time to reinforce the lock or they where the part of the original design...I really do not know...and I was not planning on pulling them out as the case lock works flawlessly and the spring mechanism that is in between two sides works like a charm. In addition, I would like to mention that on the side with the dragon there is a small discoloration around the lock (from usage and being around 120 years old I guess), it can be seen in the photos - so please take a really good look of the photos.I just like everything to be really transparent.Other then that everything else is exactly as seen in the photos, so please take a really good look as I do not accept returns!!!
