They sailed for 101 days, covering 6,900 km (4,300 miles) before reaching Raroia in the Tuamotus. Although Heyerdahl’s full hypothesis of a South American origin for Polynesians is generally rejected today, his book about the experience became a bestseller, and a documentary motion picture titled “Kon-Tiki” won an Academy Award in 1951. Intrigued by Polynesian folklore, Heyerdahl suspected that the South Sea Islands had been settled by an ancient race from thousands of miles to the east, led by a mythical hero named Kon-Tiki.
