This 1 tiyin (also spelled tyin) coin has not been minted in Uzbekistan since 1994 and rarely circulates but it is still legal tender there. (The title of world’s least valuable legal tender coin once belonged to the Jamaican ackee fruit aluminum cent but that coin was demonetized in 2018.)2) Coins can have value three ways: spending power, value of the metal, and collectible value. This coin’s value is in its unique multi-level collectability. In addition to the world’s lowest spending power, the brass-plated steel Uzbeki tiyin was minted for only one year (and the mintage total is a mystery so no one knows how long there will be a supply). Coins like this are called “one-year types.”3) This coin is special for a third reason, it is a “Number One.” Number Ones are avidly collected by world coin collectors because they are the very first coins minted by a new nation. You can tell that this was Uzbekistan’s first coin because it carries the Krause-Mishler designation of KM#1 in the coin collecting bible called, “The Standard Catalog of World Coins.” (Uzbekistan became a Republic in 1990-1991 after breaking away from the USSR. There are two different varieties of this coin, KM#1.1, the thin straight-top “1” (the large numeral 1 on the reverse) and KM#1.2, the thick curved-top “1.” When first made, the one tiyin was valued at one one-hundredth (1/100) of an Uzbeki Som, that nation’s one-cent equivalent.
