KING NICHOLAS I (MONTENEGRO) - MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT SIGNED 08/29/1864 - HFSID 26792 KING NICHOLAS I (MONTENEGRO) As ruling Prince of the Balkan kingdom, which he writes to members of his government, blaming the Ottoman Empire for slow resolution of a dispute. Manuscript Document signed: "Nicolas" as Prince, 2 pages (front and verso), 8x13. Cetinje (Montenegro), 1864 August 29. To the Consuls, in French, translated in part. He reports to his Consuls concerning delay in resolving an issue he had instructed his commissioner to take up with the Ottoman commissioner, regarding a boundary survey mission. He states that the Ottoman commissioner, a Col. Hafez Bey, had delayed a visit to the area while awaiting new instructions from his government in Constantinople. The Prince therefore informs the Consuls that the delay in settling this issue is not the fault of Montenegro's commissioner, but rather that of his Ottoman colleague. Nicholas I of Montenegro (1841-1921) became ruling prince of this Balkan nation when his uncle was assassinated in 1860. A reformist (though somewhat autocratic) ruler and a skilled military leader, Nicholas secured the support of Europe's great powers, and especially concrete aid from Russia, and fought a series of successful wars against the Ottoman Empire, gaining full recognition of Montenegro's independence at the Congress of Berlin (1878). In 1910, he became the first (and only) King of Montenegro. Siding with Serbia in World War I, Montenegro suffered Austrian occupation, and was absorbed by Serbia after World War I in what would become Yugoslavia. Nicholas had favored merger with Serbia, but under his own rule, not that of the Serbian monarchy. He lived his final years in exile, never relinquishing his claim to the throne. King Nicholas was also an accomplished poet. Montenegro declared its independence from Serbia in 2006, following a referendum, and is now an official candidate for membership in the European Union and in NATO. Multiple mailing folds.
