HISTORICAL QUOTE: "In war there is no second prize for the runner-up."General Omar N. Bradley HISTORICAL / EDUCATIONAL NOTE: THE HJ TROOPS The HJ in Germany, was the youth organization of the German Political Party and its origins date back to 1922. From 1933 until 1945, it was the sole official youth organization in Germany and was partially a paramilitary organization; was composed of the selected German male youths aged 14 to 18. The German youngsters in the H. Youth (Deutsches Jungvolk in der HJugend or "DJ", also "DJV") for younger boys aged 10 to 14, and for girls it was the League of German Girls (Bund Deutsche Mädel or "BDM"). Originally intended to foster the ideology of the German Party, with the rise of the Führer the organization shifted its focus to become a paramilitary organization training young boys for service in the Reich. Membership in the HJ in 1923 was just over 1200, however by the end of 1933 the number was 2.3 million youths and by 1936 the number in the HJ exceeded 5 million. HISTORICAL / EDUCATIONAL NOTE: GEWEHR 43, or KARABINER 43 RIFLE The Gewehr 43 or Karabiner 43 (abbreviated G-43, K-43, Gew 43, Kar 43) is a 7.92x57mm Mauser caliber semi-automatic rifle developed by Germany and manufactured by Walther GmbH during World War II. The design was based on that of the earlier model G41 (W), but incorporated an improved short-stroke piston gas system, which although similar to that of the Soviet Tokarev SVT-40, it was however manufactured through an innovative mass-production technique. Production of the G-43 began in October 1943, and in 1944, due to the reduction in the size of the weapon, the design was renamed the Karabiner 43 (or K-43). Between 1943 until the end of the war in 1945, approximately 403,000 were built; 53,435 of the most accurate selections were configured as sniper rifles. HISTORICAL / EDUCATIONAL NOTE CONTINUED: MP40 or MACHINENPISTOLE 40 The MP40 was an open-bolt, blowback-operated fully automatic submachine gun chambered for the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge and fired from a 32 round detachable box (stick) magazine. Although the MP40 fired only in a fully automatic capacity, however due to its slow rate of fire (500 – 550 rounds per minute) it could be fired in single shots with a controlled trigger pull. Designed in Germany in 1938 by Heinrich Vollmer with inspiration from its predecessor the MP38, the MP40 was heavily used by infantrymen (particularly platoon and squad leaders – NCO’s) and also by Fallschirmjägers on both the Eastern and Western Fronts. Although often referred to as a "Schmeisser" by the Allies, Hugo Schmeisser, who had developed the first mass produced sub-machine gun the MP18, was not involved in the development of the MP40. It is estimated that between 1940 - 1945 Erma Werke produced over 1.1 million of the MP40 (Machinenpistole 40) during WWII.
