Roberts's first novel, Arundel (1930), was a fictionalized account of the American Revolution. The book was a critical and commercial success, and it established Roberts as a leading historical novelist. He followed Arundel with a series of other successful novels, including Rabble in Arms (1933), Northwest Passage (1937), Oliver Wiswell (1940), and Lydia Bailey (1941). Roberts's novels were praised for their historical accuracy and their vivid recreation of the past. He was also known for his meticulous research, which often involved traveling to the locations where his stories were set. Roberts was a popular author with both critics and readers, and his novels have been translated into many languages. Roberts died in Kennebunkport, Maine, on July 21, 1957. He was 71 years old. He is buried in the First Parish Cemetery in Kennebunkport. Roberts's novels have been adapted into several films, including Northwest Passage (1940), Captain Caution (1947), and Lydia Bailey (1952).
