His 3-run home run was the turning point in the Indians 8-3 win against the Boston Red Sox in a 1-game playoff to claim the 1948 AL PENNANT, and his STELLAR PLAY helped lead the team to the 1948 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP. When he left the Indians after the 1949 season Keltner was in the TOP 5 of many of the Indians' ALL-TIME HITTING RECORDS. Yet, as good as he was a hitter, his fielding was even better. In 1939 he LED THE AL in DOUBLE PLAYS TURNED by a third baseman with 40, AND PUTOUTS with 187. His FIELDING BECAME LEGENDARY in 1941, when largely thanks to 2 different impressive back-handed defensive grabs, Keltner and his Indians were able to PUT AN END TO JOE DIMAGGIO's RECORD-BREAKING HITTING STREAK at 56 games. Keltner LED THE AL 4 TIMES in ASSISTS, 5 TIMES in DOUBLE PLAYS, and TWICE in FIELDING PERCENTAGE.
