Description: Offered by Over The Blue Horizon is yet another great book from the very well-regarded Maru ‘Mechanic of The World’ Aircraft Series: Volume 2 covering three (3) KAWASAKI aircraft : the Ki-61 HIEN TONY; the Ki-100 GOSHIKI; and the Ki-48 LILY Type 99 Light Bomber. The 'Mechanic of The World' Aircraft Series was printed in the early 1990s, and it is clear why they still highly sought after today. Most of the books covered multiple aircraft, and although written primarily in Japanese, they offered nicely done line drawings, period photographs, and color and b/w drawings and profiles – absolutely perfect for the aviation historian and advanced aviation modeler. The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien was the only mass-produced Japanese fighter of the war to use a liquid-cooled inline "V" engine. Powered by a licensed copy of the same engine that powered the Me-109 and the Macchi MC-202, the Ki-61 first flew in December 1941 – only one year after the Macchi's first flight and three years after the Bf 109E. Its only major variant was the derivative Ki-100 aircraft. In January 1945, a US bombing raid destroyed the in-line engine factory and 275 Ki-61-II-KAI Hien airframes without engines were converted to use the Mitsubishi Ha-112-II radial engine, resulting in the Ki-100. The Ki-61 Hien fighters entered service in early 1943 during the New Guinea campaign. Initially, due to its unusual appearance for a Japanese fighter, the Allies believed it to be of German or Italian origin, possibly a license-built Bf 109; the Italian-like appearance led to its code name of Tony. The Ki-61 was utilized in the South and Southwest Pacific, the Philippines, Okinawa, China, Manchuria, and in Japanese metropolitan defense against American B-29 Superfortresses. A number of Ki-61s were also used in Tokkotai (Kamikaze) missions launched toward the end of the war. The Kawasaki Ki-48 Lily was a Japanese twin-engined light bomber that began operational service in 1940, and was widely used throughout the Pacific during the war for a variety of missions. Inspired by the Soviet Tupolev SB-2, the Lily was slow, under-armored, and difficult to maneuver, a tough combination of characteristics in a shooting war. Regardless, it was widely used. These three Kawasaki WWII aircraft are nicely addressed in this 160-page, 7.5 x 10.5 inch hardcover with dust jacket which was published in 1993.
