Description: the d51 is arguably the most famous steam locomotive in Japanese railroad history; it certainly was the most numerous. over 1000 were constructed between 1936 and 1945 primarily by Kawasaki Heavy Industries...used primarily in freight service, the "degoichi", the d51 nickname in japan, served for 40 years, ending its career primarily in Hokkaido island, where electrification of the mainlines occurred last among Japan's 4 main islands...... with over 1000 locomotives being constructed during the ten year building period, the d51 underwent several iterations during its storied history....this kato model represents a nagano plant smoke collection modified d51 destined for service on the mountainous chuo line.......... this unique release in the kato d51 2016-x series features the core-less motor design which assures realistic operations at even slow speeds, the large sprued number board configuration which allows a less fractious number board installation, and chip led technology in the head lamp design.........beside those number boards, the only accessories are coupler alternatives for the front end and back end........ i acquired this d51 from a collector in japan who asseverated that he had never used the model following its purchase from a brick and mortar shop, who obliged him with a test run before he departed the shop......the model's pristine and clearly unused appearance upon arrival gave the owner's avowal the ring of verisimilitude........i even decided to forego my usual test run....... one caveat: in its transportation to the USA, the model's jewel case incurred a 1/4 long crack on its top surface......of course, the packaging integrity of the storage unit is not impacted by this aesthetic flaw......as kato offers replacement cases only without the characteristic red steam engine kato logo, i can repkace this flawed top half of the jewel case only with the uncolored version.......if a new owner wants the unsullied version (with an uncolored top half), please apprise me at time of purchase.....
