French Realist painter Jules Adolphe Aime Louis Breton (1827-1906) was known for his paintings of the idyllis French countryside. First mentored by Flix de Vigne in 1842, Breton studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent before moving to Antwerp in 1846. In 1849, his first painting (Misery and Despair) was displayed at the Paris Salon, and he exhibited Return of the Reapers, the first of his paintings of rural peasant scenes, in 1853. Breton's other works in the genre include The Gleaners and The Blessing of the Wheat, Artois. His works were extremely popular in France, England and the U.S. In addition to his art, Breton, who became a member of the Institut de France in 1886, was also a recognized writer. He published a volume of poems and several books. Lightly shaded at lower margin, touching flourish of signature. Slightly soiled at upper left margin. Overall, fine condition.
