Item Description, for your consideration: - Vintage Serigraph Fine Art Print - ARTIST: Juan Gris Title/Date: Nature Morte (1921) c.1950s Size: Paper size is about 22 x 26 Inches, printed area is 18.5 x 22.5 inches. Subject, Features: Wonderful multi color cubist work by the Spanish artist. The signature is part of the print. Heavy rag paper, handmade print. Bold colors, featuring a table set with wine and grapes. Gris lived in France and the piece evokes both styles melded into one. Very fashionable in the early 20th Century. States, Printed in France from Les Editions Braun et Cie print from Paris. It is number 24197. E. S. Herrman, New York. Condition: Aged, vintage, very good. Some edge wear and slight scuffs from being moved around. We've had it for about 30+ years. We bought a group of works in the late 1980s and all the works were from the late 1950s. Although this is not dated, we believe that time window is correct. It's clearly of high quality, vintage and stored flat. Some slight paper age spots on white edges. -- Defects: Yes, some light scuffs and marks from age. Overall very nice. About the Artist: José Victoriano González-Pérez (23 March 1887 – 11 May 1927), better known as Juan Gris, was a Spanish painter born in Madrid who lived and worked in France for most of his active period. Closely connected to the innovative artistic genre Cubism, his works are among the movement's most distinctive. There, from 1902 to 1904, he contributed drawings to local periodicals. From 1904 to 1905, he studied painting with the academic artist José Moreno Carbonero. It was in 1905 that José Victoriano González adopted the more distinctive name Juan Gris. In 1906, he moved to Paris and became friends with the poets Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Jacob, and artists Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger and Jean Metzinger. He submitted darkly humorous illustrations to journals such as the anarchist satirical magazine L'Assiette au Beurre, and also Le Rire, Le Charivari, and Le Cri de Paris. In Paris, Gris followed the lead of Metzinger and another friend and fellow countryman, Pablo Picasso. Gris began to paint seriously in 1911 (when he gave up working as a satirical cartoonist), developing at this time a personal Cubist style.[8] In A Life of Picasso, John Richardson writes that Jean Metzinger's 1911 work, Le goûter (Tea Time), persuaded Juan Gris of the importance of mathematics in painting.
