Description: Portrait of: JOSEPH HENRY WALKER, of Worcester, member of Congress from Massachusetts for five consecutive terms, born in Boston , December 21 , 1829 . Early in Mr. Walker's shoe manufacturing experience , he found it impossible to secure a proper quality of leather adapted to his purposes . For this reason he engaged in the tanning business at Appleton , Wisconsin , and also in Bristol and Engle, Illinois , until 1868, when he bought several acres of land in Chicago, and erected a large tannery in that city. Two years later J. W. Oakley was added to the firm , the name becoming Walker-Oakley Company. In all the years the concern has been in existence , they have never turned out any piece of goods regarding which anybody claimed that he could make a better article. " As good as Walker's " was considered the standard. In this way they set a high grade for other producers , and created a beneficial influence throughout the entire trade . Mr. Walker still retains his interest in this large leather house , which he was the means of founding.
