With 432 pages, the vast majority of them filled out, recording receipts, sales, accounts, expenditures, expenses, purchases of merchandise, bills, accounts-receivable, profit and loss, not only for the main store, but also for the Wood Street location which was a wholesale store. This dates from February 1884 to the end of September 1886. Joseph Horne, 1826-1892, is cited frequently, as his his son, Durbin, 1854-1916. Durbin started working in the store as a retail seller in 1876 and was made partner in 1882. Durban was responsible for the rapid expansion of the store in the 1880s through the 1900s, including moving the store to new premises, the recently completed Mercantile Library Hall on Penn Avenue, now the site of the O'Reilly Theater. In 1881 the firm built a new building at Wood Street and Liberty Avenue for its wholesale division. Many names associated with Pittsburgh's leading families are in this book: Morehead, King, Kaufmann, Byers, Childs, to name only a few.
