Description: Steinbeck, John - Cannery Row - Viking Press: New York, 1945 - First Edition / First Printing / Second State - “First Published… In January 1945” stated on the copyright page with no mention of later printings as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. Second state with the yellow cloth. “Cannery Row in Monterey in California is a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream. Cannery Row is the gathered and scattered, tin and iron and rust and splintered wood, chipped pavement and weedy lots and junk heaps, sardine canneries of corrugated iron, honky tonks, restaurants and whore houses, and little crowded groceries, and laboratories and flophouses. Its inhabitant are, as the man once said, "whores, pimps, gambler and sons of bitches," by which he meant Everybody. Had the man looked through another peephole he might have said, "Saints and angels and martyrs and holymen" and he would have meant the same thing.” The book has light soiling, edge wear, and some rubbing but otherwise remains rather bright and presentable. Internally there is a Brentano’s stamp to the rear end page and some light rubbing to the paste down— otherwise it is rather clean with no writing, other stamps, book plates etc. A deceptively uncommon Steinbeck from this period of his career. Basis for the 1982 film adaptation of the same title which starred Nick Nolte and Debra Winger. All books are offered with a full 30 day postage paid return policy. All books which are in dust jackets will be mailed with a clear archival dust jacket protector fitted. Shipping costs can be combined if multiple purchases are made.
