Artist: John Gould was a 19th century ornithologist whose career of over five decades focused mainly on describing bird species from around the globe for the Zoological Society of London. His drawings are masterful in design, composition, detail, accuracy, and color, and is only rivaled by Audubon. As an ornithologist, he produced sketches of over 3000 avian species and then passed those sketches along to more gifted artists who refined the drawings and then hand-colored the prints. The most notable artists that he commissioned were his wife Elizabeth, Henry Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Hart. Gould published over 10 folio collections in his lifetime, reserving him a place among the most eminent naturalists in Victorian England. Publication: Birds of Asia (1850-1883) by Gould, is a seven-volume collection featuring 530 hand-colored plates. The diversity in this collection is truly astounding, featuring species from a wide geographic range and multiple habitats and environments, including mountain, desert, and tropical species, amongst many others. This collection is by far the largest undertaking of his prolific career and is largely considered his greatest masterpiece.
