Description: Portrait of a Gentleman Original oil painting from the Artist’s Estate An original oil on board by John Flexmore, a portrait of a gentleman, uncompleted for an unknown reason. Unsigned but clearly by Flexmore, it is from his estate. The first and second photos show it cropped, as it could be when framed, so it would display as a completed work, the third is of the complete work. John Flexmore, (1911 - 2004) was a well-known Melbourne artist, a watercolour specialist, mainly of representational landscapes. He studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne from 1930-37 under Bernard Hall, Charles Wheeler and W.B. McInnes. After war service he painted mostly watercolour landscapes, but he also painted several oil portraits under commission, including one which was hung as a finalist for the Archibald Prize. In his early days, made a considerable number of linotype prints. He held biennial one-man shows at the Athenaeum Gallery, Melbourne until 1970. Flexmore’s works are very easy to live with, being very restful. His work is represented in private collections in Australia and overseas. Condition: the work is in good vintage condition, the colours are strong, but there is some light wear and small paint losses as shown.
