Description: This is a 1935 letter written and signed by the Assistant Secretary to the GovernorGeneral of Canada. The Governor General of Canada at thattime was John Buchan (1875-1940), thefamous Scottish novelist, historian, and Unionist politician. He is best known asthe author of the classic thriller & mystery novel THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS, whichwas made into a popular film in 1935 bythe great director Alfred Hitchcock. This letter was written and signed by JohnBuchan's assistant secretary, F. L. C. Pereira. This was Frederick Llnwood Clinton Pereira(1880-1958). Mr. Pereira served under severalGovernor Generals of Canada, and receivedmany honors for his service. He was born in London, England, and movedto Ottawa in 1888. Among his many interestswere music, the theater, and cricket. On January 1, 1933, King George V conferred upon Mr. Pereira the Order of the British Empire. Pereira was honored by George VI on July 1, 1946, when he was created a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. Pereira held commissions as Deputy Governor from seven Governors General. In 1940, and again in 1945, he was appointed Deputy Administrator. The letter is dated November 26, 1935. It is typed on an 13" by 8" sheet of Pereira'sstationery. There is an embossed emblem at the top of the sheet, which states "OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR GENERAL'S SECRETARY, CANADA". This emblemcan be seen in the last two images. (NOTE: I have severely adjusted the lighting in the last image, in order to make the emblem appear more visible, and the writing in it more legible.) The letter is addressed to an Americanautograph collector, whose name was Andrew Coddington. Coddington had requested the autograph of John Buchan,who had become the Governor General of Canada just three weeks earlier. In the letter, Pereira explains that Buchanhad made it a personal rule "....not to givehis autograph to anyone with whom he is not personally acquainted." PLEASE NOTE: this letter has severalphysical defects. This letter has a one inch triangular piece missing from the top. It also has several tears and creases near the bottom left corner, plus some straight creases whereit has been folded. Please look carefully at the scans before purchasing this letter.
