Description: Caw! (complete run) Author: Badanes, Jerry (ed.); Students for a Democratic Society Title: Caw! (complete run) Publication: New York: Caw! 1968-69 Description: A complete run (three issues + one supplement) of SDS' short-lived radical arts magazine. Although still replete with New Left politics, most of the content takes the form of essays, poetry, sheet music, artwork and photography. Notable contributions include Clarence Major's essay on Black Art, Todd Gitlin's "The Man Who Picked Up Hitchhikers," poetry from Walter Lowenfels, Marge Piercy, Julius Lester, Dick Lourie, Otto Rene Castillo, Darlene Fife, et al. The second half of issue 1 is devoted to the work of Che Guevara, Issue no. 3 is devoted to the French student uprisings (with much of the material provided by members of the Movement of 22 March), and issue 4 was issued as a supplement on Cuban culture in collaboration with the Guardian. Our copy of the supplement includes a small poster that we assume was originally included. Titled Walltest #1, it includes a quote by Adolf Hitler on the necessity of law and order that according to SDS could have been attributable to the three 1968 Presidential candidates: Richard Nixon, Hubert Humphrey and George Wallace. The first three issues in stapled, photo-illustrated wrappers, the supplement is tabloid format printed on newsprint; 86; 96; 96; 12 p., illustrations. Toning to wrappers, very minimal edge wear; the supplement and poster have been folded in fourths.
