Marais (1913-1998, born Jean-Alfred Villain-Marais in Cherbourg, Manche, Basse-Normandie, France) was a French actor with almost 90 movies and TV shows to his credit. Marais became a popular actor, though you wouldn't have known he'd turn out as he did if you met him early in his life. He was turned down by the Paris Conservatory and worked odd jobs and as a stage bit player. His good looks got him a few minor movie roles after 1933, but it wasn't until he met Jean Cocteau that his career would blossom. One of Cocteau's favorite actors, as well as his partner, Marais got starring roles in a number of his movies, including The Eagle with Two Heads (1948), Orpheus (1950) and its sequel, The Testament of Orpheus (1960), and as the Beast in Beauty and the Beast (1946). Marais was devastated by Cocteau's death in 1963, but continued to act, scoring roles in the Fantmas series of caper films and as Simon Templar in Le Saint prend l'afft (1966). Lightly toned and bowed. Lightly scuffed on right edge. Otherwise in fine condition. See more material from these signers: JEAN MARAIS See more listings in our ACTORS & ACTRESSES (13,291) category.
