JBL L100 Custom - Hand-made, Oak Cabinets, W/ Passive or Active Crossovers

And of course you can see the speakers in action: https://youtu.be/OTsmlnfvUII___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ REVISION: After recording the above video, I upgraded the midrange drivers from JBL 104H-2 to JBL 105H-1. The 105H-1 is the identical driver to what JBL uses for the L100 Classic and L100 Classic 75th Anniversary speakers. The midrange drivers also have their own separate enclosures inside the cabinets, in order to ensure the woofer doesn't interfere with the midrange.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I built these as an experiment to see if I could improve on the JBL L100 Classic speakers. To do so, I wanted to keep them as close to JBL standard as possible, while at the same time, improving on as many aspects of the L100 design as possible without substantially changing the identity of the speaker. I used all brand new JBL tweeters, midranges, and woofers. I began by building the cabinets out of solid oak hardwood, stained a deep indigo blue, then I applied 5 coats of high gloss polyurethane, and one coat of semi-gloss. The cabinets and finish are a major improvement over JBL's standard L100 Classic cabinets, which are made from MDF (partical board). I kept the same general layout of the drivers, and did my best to recreate the iconic front grilles using acoustic pyramid foam, which is mounted in solid oak hardwood frames, also finished to match the cabinets. I then wired the speakers for use with either active or passive crossovers. The rear panel of each cabinet has 4 sets of gold plated banana plug inputs. One for each driver, and two for each woofer. For the drivers I used JBL jt025ti1 tweeters (identical to the L100 Classic), JBL 105H midranges (identical to the L100 Classic), and JBL GTO1220D woofers (upgrades over the L100 woofers). The woofers are the next major upgrade, as they are dual 2 ohm voice coil drivers, and can handle up to 1400 watts of power each. They do not require that much power, but can handle it if you have it available. As a result, you have the option of running these speakers using one amplifier or using multiple amplifiers. To use just one amplifier, the passive crossover option must be used. I have brand new JBL L100 Classic crossovers that I can install allowing a single speaker wire connection to power each speaker. Or if you opt for an active crossover, you will need a DSP, and then you can connect each driver to its own channel of amplification, and send each driver it's own specific frequency. This is the preferred option, since the speakers get more power, and the amplifier(s) are used more efficiently, sending only a specific frequency to each driver (thus not wasting power sending additional frequencies that the passive crossover would have to block). Included with this listing is the digital active crossover DSP files specifically created and tailored to these speakers. You would simply input these files into your DSP and the speakers will be completely setup. These digital config files have both the crossover settings as well as equalized filters for each driver. I personally created these filters by measuring each driver with a digital microphone and testing each one individually. Once measured, I used equalizing/correction software to create the digital signal filters for each driver, which should be input into your DSP. These filters and crossover config files will ensure the frequency response for each speaker is as close to ideal and as accurate as is possible. They make very high-end DSP's and have options for any price range. These speakers were a labor of love and were a complete success. They sound terrific. And they can handle any job. If you want to use them for quiet critical listening, they will shine. If you want to turn the volume up for a party or event, they absolutely jam! And they are built to last. The drivers are brand new, high-end, genuine JBL. And the cabinets are solid oak hardwood. They should last for generations.
