Although his birthplace is unknown, he was active in Osaka. His birth name was Mori Sho, his courtesy name was Shukuha, and his initial art name was Sosen. Later, in the 4th year of the Bunka era (1807), he changed his name to Mori Sosen. He studied under Yamamoto Yoshunsai of the Kano school in Osaka, and after Yoshunsai's death, he was influenced by Maruyama Okyo, becoming known for his emphasis on realism. He became renowned for his depiction of monkeys, achieving unparalleled skill in this genre. He is considered the founder of the Mori school, with his younger brother Mori Shuko being one of his prominent successors. He adopted Mori Tessan, a high disciple of Maruyama Okyo, as his heir.
