Description: Pinus thunbergii - Japanese Black Pine - 18 to 24 inches tall - 3 years old Mature Height: 30 feet Aspect: full sun, tolerates some shade Hardiness Zone: USDA 5 Japanese Black Pines are most often used for bonsai and high-detail pruning because of their easily shaped branching habit and dense clumps of needles. They form wide branches with a short rounded top more readily than most other pine species and mature trees often look manicured even when they never received any pruning. The growth rate is fast, with some trees growing as much as four feet in a single year at our nursery. If the new growth is pruned before the needles reach their full length then new buds will typically form and grow at each cut in the same season. For stems that are 1-3 years old then cuts will typically form buds the following winter and produce new growth in late spring or early summer. Unlike most other pine species, Japanese Black Pine will readily resprout new growth after hard pruning. Pruning can be done either in summer or winter for ideal regrowth. Wood up to three years old generates new growing tips after pruning as opposed to most pines that can only be pruned during the current "candle" growth phase. This makes Japanese Black Pines one of the best pine species for privacy screens and hedges as they take to shearing and topping well. Because most of the Japanese Black Pine seedlings we sell will be used for either bonsai or styled landscape trees we periodically prune most of our trees at regular intervals to maintain a large number of twigs and buds down down on the plant. Larger sizes of Japanese Black Pine will typically have been pruned two or three times, seedlings and quarts will usually not have been pruned yet. Pruned trees will still grow normally upright in the landscape after planting, the pruning is mainly meant to keep a large number of low branch buds active. Plug/First Year Seedling Information The first year seedlings do best when grown on in a container for one season instead of planting directly in the ground. Japanese Black Pines have a wider, broader habit than most other Pine species Trees are often formally pruned Wind-battered Japanese Black Pines growing on an oceanside beach Shipping Information Your plants packed in bundles with moist bark, peat, or sawdust around the roots.
