Background leading up to this timeframe that month: As a result of the Spanish-American War, control of Cuba passed from Spain to the United States on January 1, 1899, and it was governed by direct U.S. military administration until May 20, 1902. On January 1, 1899, Edison photographers recorded the evacuation of Havana, Cuba, when Spanish armies officially left the island. The Library of Congress has two films that show the procession on the Prado, a main boulevard in Havana. The film also shows the streets crowded with people, including many typical Cubans and a few Spaniards.
