Matting Window Opening Size: 8 1/2 x 11 inches. Overall size with frame: 12 5/8 x 15 1/8 inches. Very good condition.Exhibited: Royal Scottish Academy 71st Exhibition, 1897, as “The Cauld Stane Slap”. The artist titled it as such in the lower left margin of the painting, additionally with “Pentland Hills”, “for R.S.A.”, “my principle contribution”, and with his full signature and address at 130 George St., Edinburgh to the right. The painting itself is signed “J. Kinnear”.Literature: A picture of this painting was featured in the journal ‘The Artist: An Illustrated Monthly Record of Arts, Crafts and Industries’, Volume XIX, 1897, London. It was illustrated on page 166. See picture posted above (internet screen shot).Starting on page 160, the journal covered ‘The Year’s Art in Scotland’, ‘Scotland’s Place in Art’, etc. Mr. Kinnear was exhibiting his paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) in their 71st Exhibition. It was a major show where they were displaying works by the late Sir John Millais. 1450 artworks were submitted and around half were rejected. The journal particularly liked Kinnear’s paintings and on page 163 stated:“Of Mr. Kinnear’s three pictures, the most direct and characteristic is “The Cauld Stane Slap”, a view of rugged upland, with a sunlit tarn on the foreground”. The journal had a particular emphasis on the Arts and Crafts Movement, which was important in Scotland and England. Here in the USA, we think of certain Tonalist landscape paintings as being Arts & Crafts style or landscape paintings by the likes of Arthur W. Dow being that. I can see how Kinnear’s paintings such as this rare black and white example would appeal to Arts and Crafts lovers, too. Also, his record painting, a 12 x 16.7 oil on board which sold for 28,774.00 USD at Sotheby’s, “The Links At St. Andrews”, had a Tonalist leaning look.Subject: Cauldstane Slap is a pass located in the Pentland Hills of Scotland. It marks the border between the neighboring council areas of West Lothian and Scottish Borders and historically the border between Edinburghshire and Peeblesshire.Provenance: Private collection, Philadelphia area. Estate cleanout item handled by a small country auction house where no owner names are disclosed. The Royal Scottish Academy (RSA): Scotland’s national academy of art. It promotes contemporary Scottish art. The Academy was founded in 1826 by eleven artists meeting in Edinburgh. Originally named the Scottish Academy, it became the Royal Scottish Academy on being granted a royal charter in 1838. The RSA maintains a unique position in the country as an independently funded institution led by eminent artists and architects to promote and support the creation, understanding, and enjoyment of visual arts through exhibitions and related educational events.About the artist: James Kinnear was an Edinburgh landscape artist who was born in 1846. He exhibited 7 works at the Royal Academy, including “March, The Year’s Decline”, and “The Opening Year”.
