Provenance: Multimillion estate Kenilworth IL, About James Nowak James Nowak began working with oils and pastels at the age of 6 and progressed to ceramics in high school. While studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington, he also taught ceramics at a local community center.; He completed his BMSE degree in 1981 and began working for the U.S. Navy as an assistant nuclear engineer aboard submarines. Nowak worked nights as a nuclear engineer and, during the days, he pursued his love for glass, studying at the Pratt School of Fine Arts and the Pilchuck Glass School. Nowak has worked with Dale Chihuly, Dante Marioni, and William Morris. His work is highly decorated with canes and murrine, and he takes his inspiration from the raw grandeur of the maritime Pacific Northwest. He often teaches at the Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle, where he has his own studio.
