Description: Florence Leyland c1874 Drypoint Printed on cream laid paper with watermark and full margins. Glasgow's catalogue raisonne states that there may have been a print-run of up to 20 impressions of this drypoint before cancellation, and even more after cancellation. Whistler reworked the plate extensively through 11 different states. This printing is from the edition of approximately 20 that was published by the Fine Art Society, London, 1879. There has been some confusion about the final states of this print. Glasgow's catalogue raisonne lists state 11 as the final state, with 11a showing very faint lines of cancellation across the face. It states that the plate was restored and printed posthumously with the inscription "I am Flo" retraced and altered from the version that is barely visible in Whistler's last printings. Kennedy's earlier catalog confuses the situation with only 9 states and no clear recognition of the faint cancellation lines. Other impressions that seem, like this one, to exhibit the cancellation lines have sold at auction as state 6. See my final two photos of one that sold in 2010 at Swann Auctions for $16,800. It is essentially identical to the print I offer here. Plate: 8 3/8 x 5 3/8 inches.
