Description: Sketch of some trees in a wooded landscape in Llangollen, north Wales by James Baker Pyne (1800-1870). With writing in James Baker Pyne's hand along the bottom edge that says '... (illegible) Llangollen, Aug '40'. The sketch will have been part of the drawings he made in the region, a period of time represented by the artist's pencil and watercolour work 'In the Vale of Llangollen, North Wales' that sold (for £1500) through Christie's in December 2011. The sketch is of some trees on a hill; the central tree has fallen down, exposing the roots. The sketch is 30.5cm by 28.2cm. Toned around the edges with light spotting and stains. Borders of the verso show glue where the sketch was previously kept within a mount. Creases to top right hand corner, no tears. Born in Bristol in 1800, Pyne was an English landscape painter who was greatly influenced by J.M.W. Turner.
