About the book (from Goodreads):UNFINISHED TALES is a collection of narratives ranging in time from the Elder Days of Middle-earth to the end of the War of the Ring, and further relates events as told in THE SILMARILLION and THE LORD OF THE RINGS.The book concentrates on the lands of Middle-earth and comprises Gandalf's lively account of how he came to send the Dwarves to the celebrated party at Bag-End, the story of the emergence of the sea-god Ulmo before the eyes of Tuor on the coast of Beleriand, and an exact description of the military organization of the Riders of Rohan and the journey of the Black Riders during the hunt for the Ring.UNFINISHED TALES also contains the only surviving story about the long ages of Númenor before its downfall, and all that is known about the Five Wizards sent to Middle-earth as emissaries of the Valar, about the Seeing Stones known as the Palantiri, and about the legend of Amroth.Writing of the Appendices to THE LORD OF THE RINGS, J. R. R. Tolkien said in 1955, "Those who enjoy the book as a 'heroic romance' only, and find 'unexplained vistas' part of the literary effect, will neglect the Appendices, very properly." UNFINISHED TALES is avowedly for those who, to the contrary, have not yet sufficiently explored Middle-earth, its languages, its legends, it politics, and its kings. Tolkien that were never completed during his lifetime, but were edited by his son Christopher Tolkien and published in 1980. A really amazing work and enjoyable read if you're a die-hard Tolkien fan. These are unfinished drafts. And it would be interesting to know what Tolkien felt about them. Part of me thinks he wrote them for himself, at least some of them, as a reference point as he wrote around these events and tales. We know that he one day wanted to publish The Silmarillion when he felt it was finished, but beyond that I do not know. I just cannot imagine him sending some of these bits to publishers. Nonetheless, I am grateful to be able to read them. Out of all the posthumously published works of Tolkien, and this being the primary right after the Silmarillion, I have to admit it is the most interesting. We do get more expanded treatments of some of these tales in subsequent books, but all in all, the narrative structure of this tome is quite pleasing. I still very much enjoyed my reread of the Unfinished Tales because it gives so much information to the world of Middle-Earth and unearths a lot of connections. I like that it mentions the references in The Lord of the Rings so that you can get a better understanding of the overall story. Such a fun book. I loved all the cut content in this. Especially the third age stuff. It's such a bummer that he never finished so much. ______________________ {I'll always combine shipping costs and refund any excess shipping charges for multiple-copy book orders.}For all "buy it now" items, please use ADD TO CART if you plan to order more than one item at the same time.______________ WOW!
