Legend: Costumes of 19th Century Rome, The True Descendants of the Romans: BARTOLOMMEO PINELLI, A PROLIFIC ENGRAVER, was one of the most popular artists in lower Italy in the first half of the 19th century. Born in the suburbs of Travestere in Rome, he is still the most exact portraitist and the best historian of his people: the labourers, gardeners and wine growers beyond the Tiber, who believe that only they are the true descendants of the Romans. TOP ROW: The headdresses (1) are from a series of 52 engravings that appeared in 1823, when Pinelli illustrated the Roman poem Meo Patacca - a satire dating back to 1695. Pinelli, however, was more concerned with the people of his own time. Meo Patacca is full of wry comments on local society, which is brought vividly to life. This has ensured its lasting popularity among the populace. Written by Giuseppe Bernari in the popular dialect of Rome, it is one of those comic poems in which the characters are sufficiently aware to be able to laugh at their own excesses. Its subject is the upheaval in Rome caused by the siege of Vienna by the Turks. The news is aggravated by the false rumour that the standard of Mohammed has already been raised over Vienna, and will soon be seen all over Europe. 1 One of the witnesses of the marriage of Patacca, wearing a bonnet that is tied round his hair with a knot of ribbons. 2 A young man with a plaited tress of hair that forms a chignon, fixed by a hairpin. 3 Marco Pepe, Patacca's rival, wearing the same beribboned bonnet as 1 and also, tipped forward over his forehead, a small cotton cap. 4 Nuccia, Patacca's bride. Some strands of her hair are plaited and others are worn loose. The whole coiffure is piled up on the head and held in place with a comb and a knot of ribbons. 5 Meo Patacca. 6 A working man, wearing a long hairnet under a hat in the Bolivar style. This hairnet is lengthened by two cords with small tassels that hang down as far as the belt. 7 A working woman, wearing a high chignon, secured, as was customary, with a comb, and long pearl earrings. 8 A young man with a flower, placed, not on his open jacket, but at the throat of his waistcoat 9 & 10 Two types of hat. 11 A woman's chignon, as seen from behind.
