The British historical genre painter Alfred Elmore (1815-1881) was born in Clonakilty, Ireland. Initially influenced by Richard Parkes Bonington's troubadour style, he soon moved on to paint religious canvases such as "The Martyrdom of Thomas a Becket", a work commissioned by Daniel O'Connell for Dublin's Westland Row Church. Associated with "The Clique", young artists who followed in the footsteps of Hogarth and David Wilkie, Elmore's paintings frequently explored historical settings, including episodes from Shakespeare and the French Revolution. He often incorporated scenes depicting technological innovations such as depicted in his paintings "The Invention of the Stocking Loom" and "The Invention of the Combing Machine", though his most famous work "On the Brink" is a moral genre painting of young woman who has lost her fortune gambling and is on the brink of responding to the seduction of a satan-like figure.
