The line from Stonega to Apalachia, VA, 5.35 miles, was opened in 1896. The line traversed rough and mountainous terrain. Maximum grade was 2.17 percent. The principal industries of the region were mining and coal and coke manufacture. The Interstate Railroad connected with the following railroads; Louiscille & Nashville RR Appalachia, VA and Dochester Jct. VA. Norfolk & Western Ry.Norton, VA. Roaring Fork RR Pardee, VA. Southern Ry. Norton and Exeter Jct. VA. The railroad dieselized beginning in 1952, and by 1954 the last steam locomotives were retired. Main line: Stonega, VA to Glamorgan, VA, 22.301 miles.
