The thematic elements are similar to that of Shirley Jackson's The Lottery. How long does a society cling to a practice before it recognizes that the ritual or element is no longer necessary. In this case, it involves the Genetic Counsel of Inhuman society who determines which people should marry and reproduce based on a eugenics principle. This is causing problems in society, which the royal rulers are ambivalent towards.That is until, Medusa becomes pregnant and the Genetic Counsel demand the child be aborted. A split occurs, violence happens, and an unsatisfactory conclusion occurs that really addresses none of the issues. In fact, it seems the ending just sets up another story. One that I believe was never told. The problem was that Medusa and her friends run away to Earth. Had they remained and the problems caused major strife within the society, it would have been a much more rewarding story. Still, if you can find it's worth a read.
